Mile 37.5: Packerville, Connecticut
A view of a portion of the 1890s Moosup and Norwich quadrangles, showing the HP&F winding town the Quinnebaug Valley and up the Shetucket Valley as it seeks flat land between Plainfield and Willimantic
Packerville was the first station stop west of Plainfield (it is still within the town of Plainfield, very close to the Canterbury line.) It is out in the countryside, and and the landmarks that distinguish it are Packerville Baptist Church, the 19th Century bridge holding Packerville Road, Packers' Pond and the dam holding it back, and this railroad crossing, a vintage view of which can be seen on the Tyler City Station site.

A pair of Providence and Worcester GE Dash-8 locomotives leads a Willimantic-bound freight through the crossing at Packerville. The lead unit, 3901, is a B39-8 that was built for LMX leasing in April, 1988. The trailing locomotive, 4007, is a B40-8W that was built for the Atchison, Topeka, and Sante Fe Railway in April, 1992. The two make for an interesting looking consist, being very similar locomotives with very different cabs. (12/2023.)

Note that the site of the Packerville Depot, 37.5 miles from Providence on my 1913 NYNH&H schedule, is MP 1.78 on today's Providence & Worcester Willimantic Line (12/2023.)

All rolling stock identification was done with www.rrpicturearchives.net
In particular I would like to acknowledge Leighton L. Haeseler, who has seen a lot of these same cars (they seem to be repeat visitors to Connecticut) and takes the time to research their build dates and histories. His work confirmed many of the identifications here.

After this point, the railroad curves towards Aspinook Pond and the Quinebaug River, which I cover on the Canterbury page.
