Mile 104: Plainville, Connecticut
A section of the 1898 Meriden USGS quadrangle, showing NY&NE station stops from New Britain to Bristol

This segment of the line is active rail, and currently owned by the CSX Railroad and operated by the Berkshire and Eastern on behalf of Pan Am Southern. There is a small yard present in Plainville, along the former Canal Line north of the Hartford, Providence and Fishkill. The two roads cross at a diamond, and according to Tyler City Station, the union station was to the southeast of the diamond. The Canal Line is abandoned both south and north of Plainville, although it seems to have several customers in the immediate area.

Looking west on Rte 372 at the crossing. This isn't the world's greatest photo, but I really like how the crossing sign looks in the rainy twilight (3/2024.)

Two Berkshire & Eastern B40 Dash-8 locomotives rest in the Plainville Yard. BERX 5943 (built 4/1988) and BERX 5974 (built 5/1988) are still mostly in their Pan-Am livery- they were until the CSX purchase of Pan-Am MEC 5943 and MEC 5974. Note that 5974 has had more of its markings removed. This section of track is under the control of Pan Am Southern- a 50-50 split company between CSX and Norfolk Southern that is operated by the Genesee & Wyoming subsidiary Berkshire & Eastern. Here the two ex-Pan Am engines rest on their home rails in the Plainville Yard, parallel to the Canal Line just north of the HP&F/NY&NE/Highland Division (3/2024.)
