After Norfolk and Haystack mountain, the trains ran to East Canaan. Upon reaching the Whiting river valley, the engineers had a dilemma. The train needed to cross, but it was too wide for a bridge. To complicate things, there was a river running through the valley. After some Yankee ingenuity, they decided to build an enormous viaduct across the valley, and to run the river through a tunnel:

No traces of the tracks remain on the top of this ancient structure, but there is still ballast!

The roadbed has been completely obliterated by some development after crossing Whiting road; after East Canaan it can again be seen running south of Rt. 44 into Canaan.
